Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time for communities across the nation to come together and address a critical issue that affects people of all ages, including our students, educators, and families at Guy-Perkins School District. Suicide is a complex and heartbreaking reality that impacts countless lives each year. By raising awareness, educating ourselves, and fostering a culture of support, we can make a difference.

Awareness is the first step in prevention. Some warning signs of suicide include:

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and activities once enjoyed.

  • Changes in behavior or mood such as increased irritability, sadness, or aggression.

  • Talking about death or hopelessness in conversation or on social media.

  • Giving away prized possessions or saying goodbye to loved ones.

  • Declining academic performance and loss of interest in schoolwork.

If you notice any of these signs in someone, it's essential to take them seriously. Engage in a compassionate conversation, and encourage them to seek help. A simple question like, “Are you okay?” can open the door to life-saving dialogue.

If you or someone you know is struggling, there are resources available:

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255)

  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

  • Local School Counselor: Reach out to our counselors at Guy-Perkins School District for guidance and support.

Together, we can make a difference by being supportive and compassionate. By standing together, we can save lives!
